Knucklebone Oscar’s Uncle Knuckle album is released today

Guitarist-singer Knucklebone Oscar’s new solo album Uncle Knuckle is out today, Friday 5 April. The album is available in stores on vinyl, CD and digital streaming services. The album, which is unashamedly upbeat in tone and mood, features the artist’s influences from across the years, with songs that bow to the likes of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Dr John, Little Richard and even Marvin Gaye, remixed cover versions of Knucklebone Oscar’s original compositions. Notable guests from Tuure Kilpeläinen to Marjo Leinos spice up the old, the new, the borrowed and the blue.

The Uncle Knuckle album starts with the Troglodyte trilogy, which is a bone-chilling album from the start: not many Finnish artists could credibly send out this kind of sound mischief and mischief. After the trilogy, Knucklebone Oscar hands the torch to keyboardist-singer Tuomo Prättälä, who is known from the duo Tuomo & Markus, among others, and interprets the I’ve Got To Use My Imagination cover made famous by Gladys Knight and the Pips as if it were his own, with Knucklebone Oscar’s guitar solos taking part in the soulful dialogue. Other guests on the album’s tracks include Marjo Leinonen of Balls fame, Finnish roots music icon Eero Raittinen, Molly Moonstone of visual and burlesque fame, singer Ina Forsman and singer-songwriter Tuure Kilpeläinen with her beautifulrendition of Luther Ingram’s soul classic (If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right.

According to Knucklebone Oscar, the new album is a kind of theme album and a collection of different sounds, styles and songs that he has been a fan of and has composed himself throughout his 30-year career. The fist has been infused with intense aromas and moods from different parts of the world, musicians and musical styles.
– It’s liberating, exciting and even scary to push this album out. It’s been so long since the last Knucklebone album that I don’t really know what people expect, or even what I think. Other than, “Thank God it’s here and done!”, Knucklebone Oscar breathes a sigh of relief.

– This is something of a summary of Knucklebone Oscar’s past, present and perhaps future. A modern blues manifesto that doesn’t exactly sound like the blues! My “friends and family” album: a 50-year-old rocker’s mid-term review of everything that’s been done, Knucklebone Oscar continues to open the album’s red wire wrapping.

– The celebrity gig was celebrated in a loud houlama-hulabalooza in advance a week ago (On The Rocks in central Helsinki on 31 March) and the band that will be playing the gigs, King Kong, is in high spirits and the whole thing is in sharper gear than perhaps ever before. While the live show is not the same as the album, and especially for this album, there are echoes of each other and resonance on both sides.

Knucklebone Oscar will tour with the new Uncle Knuckle album and the King Kong band from spring onwards at release shows around Finland. The Uncle Knuckle album is released and the shows are sold by Stupido Records.

The title track of Knucklebone Oscar’s solo album is now available with a video – listen, download and watch the video here!

Knucklebone Oscar will release his new solo album Uncle Knuckle on 22 March. The album’s second single release, the title track Uncle Knuckle, will be released today 6 March, accompanied by an upbeat video, in the artist’s trademark hilariously unflashy style

Knucklebone Oscar says the following about the new single and video:

– The Uncle Knuckle song originated years ago as a sort of tribute to Professor Longhair’s piano solo Big Chief. The only thing that really remains from this starting point is the piano solo in the intro. The song was largely shaped by producer Sami Baldauf into a kind of “James Brown & Prince with hints of New Orleans” party stomper. The video is about a bohemian special that gets you going, freaking out and confused. One can sense a certain amount of first-hand experience in the story. And for once, it’s a song that’s not too long, but an old-school single, 2 minutes 30 seconds long!

Musically, this is a powerful piece of rock ‘n’ roll and funk: you can hear Knucklebone intact, with a swinging, stinging guitar.

– Uncle Knuckle is, in my opinion, a kind of stylistic hybrid of James Brown, Tom Waits and Dr. John, influenced by the stuff I love most. Less actual blues, hit song soul or old school rock and roll. The straightforward and concise song captures the gumbo or mix of the upcoming album very well, Knucklebone Oscar enthuses

The guitarist-singer’s previous album King of Helsinki was released in 2016, so it’s been several years since his last Knucklebone Oscar album. Most recently, in 2022, the artist released the album Believe It Or Not with Judge Nurmio. The album, which featured some tasty gospel rock, was widely praised in the British music media and elsewhere.

On the new album, Oscar talks in his own madcap style about ageing as a rocker, vintage rock and roll, the expectations of fans, the fear and excitement of the new.

– The Uncle Knuckle album features more recent stuff as well as older songs that have only just been completed. It’s kind of a theme album, a collection of different sounds, styles and songs that I’ve been tweaking over a 30-year career. It’s really liberating and tickling to have a whole body of new music out there in the ether. This album has been carefully matured and twisted. It’s exciting because the result is so different from my previous albums,” Knucklebone Oscar admits.

The Uncle Kn uckle album also features guest vocal soloists such as Tuomo Prättälä, Marjo Leinonen, Molly Moonstone, Ina Forsman, Eero Raittinen and Tuure Kilpeläinen. The artist’s own son is also in the mix.

– Uncle Knuckle is my “friends and family” album. It’s a 50-year-old rocker’s mid-term review of everything that’s been done.

Knucklebone Oscar

Knucklebone Oscar’s trademark is energetic rock ‘n’ roll and super wild live show. The guitar master, who is celebrating his 20th birthday, proved his life in January at UMK by serving the funniest show of the race, Caveman! Over the years, Oscar has released nearly a dozen albums and performed around the world, all the way from China to America. In recent years, the repertoire has expanded from straight rock to intense and dark rhythm blues, without abandoning the Show and entertaining stage action.
Stupido Records released the acclaimed “King of Helsinki” 20th anniversary album in 2016, and in January Oscar represented Finland at the World Champions of Blues in Memphis, Tennessee. The active guitarist is like a swaying Dean Martin in the casino’s elevator: well-groomed and confident, but a little too cheeky and crunchy. The performance is always guaranteed: badass and entertaining.
