Two big names in the Finnish indie return

Indie rock great Joosua, who retired in 2017, will once again come to the rescue of Finnish indie. The band’s hit “Sudenkorento” is neo-renaissance with Lauri Haav’s song “Mua ei voi pelastaa” sampled and trending at Tiktok. “Annoit mut pois” is the band’s latest single and picks up where the band left off in 2017, a comeback no one knew they deserved.

Mara Balls to release new album, Virtaa in June

Power is Mara Balls’ fourth full-length album.
The release date is Friday 7 June and the album will be released in LP and CD formats, as well as on all streaming services.

“Power is a soothing spring water flowing down from the mountain; it’s a relief, comfort and hope that helps you keep moving forward,” describes Mara.
The vinyl is clear translucent, like the aforementioned spring water.

But it’s also a rock record with a lot of sinew, which can be used for a variety of moods. Some might talk about wine that gets better with age, but Maria Mattila prefers to use the metaphor of flowing water.

Problems singles on vinyl – Hokkus Pokkus new single from Mara Balls

Problems’ single collection is the first in a series of Finnish punk rarities

Problems Singles 1978-1983, created by Tumppi Varonen since the 1970s, is the first part of a series of Finnish punk and new wave singles on vinyl.

Nowadays, these once commonplace singles can cost up to thousands of euros each, so for most people the only way to get them home on vinyl is through reissues.

Packaged in gatefold sleeves and printed on pink vinyl, the collection comes with full information and commentary on the songs by the band’s founder, Tumppi.

After Problems, the Finnish punk & new wave singles collection will feature Pelle Miljoona, Eppu Normaali, Woude and Sehr Schnell.

The first part of the collection is dedicated to the memory of Problems’ founding member Ari Taskinen. The series is published by Stupido Records in collaboration with PNV Records in the US.

Tumppi Varonen & Problems will celebrate the release of the collection by playing their special old songs at Paasitorn’s Pääsiäispunk event on Sat 30.3.

The compilation CD will be released in a couple of weeks.

Mara Balls

Mara Balls is a Tampere-based musician and artist with the toughest band in the world called Mara Balls.

“The second album, Elävä Kivi, reveals more about my sensitive side than the debut. Themes of the album are: time, shaking of the mind and confusion about existence. At the heart of it all, though, is the realisation that I live. By playing, I make myself more real to myself and to others. I play, so I’m alive. The sound I produce is like a ringing frame for the experience of existence.”

“When I play guitar, knobs on the maximum with the most torn fuzz in the universe, I have a hell of a safe feeling; I follow the loud voice as if it were my shepherd. However it seems that over the last year, I have grown up as a songwriter into an expression where I also dare to look behind the noice; listen to silence. On the album and also at the gigs there is more silence and sensitivity than in the debut, although there is also harder “mining with a heavier hand” than before. Both of these extremities are part of my daily life. Chaos is my home, I recently wrote in the corner of a paper.”

Mara is also remembered as the bassist of the band Jukka Ja Jytämimmit, who had a passionate career, and as the initiator of the Tampere-based cultural phenomenon Keltainen Talo.

Mara Balls latest release is a live album “Ratina Live ’18” which was released on 29.05.2020.
