Knucklebone Oscar will release his new solo album Uncle Knuckle on 22 March. The album’s second single release, the title track Uncle Knuckle, will be released today 6 March, accompanied by an upbeat video, in the artist’s trademark hilariously unflashy style

Knucklebone Oscar says the following about the new single and video:

– The Uncle Knuckle song originated years ago as a sort of tribute to Professor Longhair’s piano solo Big Chief. The only thing that really remains from this starting point is the piano solo in the intro. The song was largely shaped by producer Sami Baldauf into a kind of “James Brown & Prince with hints of New Orleans” party stomper. The video is about a bohemian special that gets you going, freaking out and confused. One can sense a certain amount of first-hand experience in the story. And for once, it’s a song that’s not too long, but an old-school single, 2 minutes 30 seconds long!

Musically, this is a powerful piece of rock ‘n’ roll and funk: you can hear Knucklebone intact, with a swinging, stinging guitar.

– Uncle Knuckle is, in my opinion, a kind of stylistic hybrid of James Brown, Tom Waits and Dr. John, influenced by the stuff I love most. Less actual blues, hit song soul or old school rock and roll. The straightforward and concise song captures the gumbo or mix of the upcoming album very well, Knucklebone Oscar enthuses

The guitarist-singer’s previous album King of Helsinki was released in 2016, so it’s been several years since his last Knucklebone Oscar album. Most recently, in 2022, the artist released the album Believe It Or Not with Judge Nurmio. The album, which featured some tasty gospel rock, was widely praised in the British music media and elsewhere.

On the new album, Oscar talks in his own madcap style about ageing as a rocker, vintage rock and roll, the expectations of fans, the fear and excitement of the new.

– The Uncle Knuckle album features more recent stuff as well as older songs that have only just been completed. It’s kind of a theme album, a collection of different sounds, styles and songs that I’ve been tweaking over a 30-year career. It’s really liberating and tickling to have a whole body of new music out there in the ether. This album has been carefully matured and twisted. It’s exciting because the result is so different from my previous albums,” Knucklebone Oscar admits.

The Uncle Kn uckle album also features guest vocal soloists such as Tuomo Prättälä, Marjo Leinonen, Molly Moonstone, Ina Forsman, Eero Raittinen and Tuure Kilpeläinen. The artist’s own son is also in the mix.

– Uncle Knuckle is my “friends and family” album. It’s a 50-year-old rocker’s mid-term review of everything that’s been done.

Problems singles are the first in a series of Finnish punk rarities on vinyl

Problems Singles 1978-1983, created by Tumppi Varonen since the 1970s, is the first in a series of Finnish punk and new wave singles on vinyl.

Nowadays, these once commonplace singles can cost up to thousands of euros a copy, so for most people the only chance to get them home on vinyl is through reissues.

Packaged in gatefold covers and printed on pink vinyl, the collection comes with full information and comments on the songs from the band’s founder, Tumppi.

After Problems, the Finnish punk & new wave singles collection will feature Pelle Miljoona, Eppu Normaali, Woude and Sehr Schnell.

The first part of the collection is dedicated to the memory of Problems’ founding member Ari Taskinen. The series is published by Stupido Records in collaboration with PNV Records in the US.

Tumppi Varonen & Problems will celebrate the release of the collection by playing their special old songs at Paasitorn’s Pääsiäispunk event on Sat 30.3.

The hugely popular Punk and Yäk festival is back!

On Friday and Saturday 9.-10.8. 2023, there will be punking and yäkking in the courtyard of the House of Art in Old Turku, just like last year.

Once again, there will be a wide range of punk history and nightlife from Turku, the rest of the country and the New Zealand/UK axis. On Friday, Turku’s reputation will be upheld by old HC legends Turun Tauti, Abortti 13 with their ice showand Kovaa Rasvaa, the country’s hardest live band. Maria Makaaberi and Nyrkkitappelu represent the younger generation and Bastards the older generation.

Saturday’s foreign representative is Desperate Measures (NZ/UK), who started their career back in 1982 in Christchurch, New Zealand. The band continues to operate in their current London base. Local colour will be provided by the excellent Irish punk band Loretta Problem and national greetings from Dirty Pikarit, Rattus, Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, Holy Dolls, Lost, Appendix and Punk and Yäk’s godfather Pelle Miljoona with Pispala Punks.

Desperate Measures

The programme will be completed and refined during the spring, especially for Fridays.

– Punk and Yäk, organised for the second time, immediately established itself in Turku’s festival summer. The festival was almost sold out and the courtyard of the Art House was filled with both older and younger punk lovers, says the festival’s production team.

The festival is produced by Stupido Productions Ltd.

The festival is age-restricted (K-18). Gates open on Friday at 4pm and Saturday at 1pm and the party goes on until midnight. Tickets for the festival are €40/one day (€43 at the gate) and €70/ two days (€75 at the gate).

Pelle Miljoona Band releases a classic peace song!!

Palajan luoksesi is the first single release from the Pelle Miljoona Band’s upcoming album to be released this autumn. According to Pelle Miljoona himself, it is a “classic peace song”. So don’t expect any rap-punk from Pelle, even though the song has biting guitars played by Harri Tyni and the famous, long-awaited Message.

Stupido Records Store – both online and on location in Helsinki’s bohemian Kallio district – offers a large variety of mainly independent, alternative music from Finland, Britain and North America. However, you may find here also harder-to-find records from for example Sweden, Estonia, Jamaica and even Africa.
